Hockey, Staph and Paint!

We're now 3 weeks into the new year, but it already seems like a lifetime away that Dan and I were enjoying New Year's Eve with our friends!
With some stroke of luck we scored tickets to go see the World Juniors Gold Medal game, Canada vs Sweden! All I can say is WOW, what a game! The crowd was so loud it was impossible to hear the referee's whistle most of the time. Canada's victory made the night even more sweet. A once in a life time game and Dan and I are so lucky we were able to see it. Who knows when the World Juniors will return to Ottawa? Even that game, only 2 weeks ago, seems like it was months ago!!!

Tuesday morning after the game marked the beginning of finding out about Dan's infection. Since then there's been trips to Emerg, IV antibiotics twice a day, Surgery, and now recovery. Dan is doing awesome and is recovering so quickly! Other than the hole in his leg, you'd never know that he had surgery just over a week ago. The nurse no longer has to come to the house to debride the wound, but we do make daily trips to CLSC so that the gauze and packing can still be changed. The C&S came back inconclusive so we still don't know what kind of bacteria caused the infection, but it was likely a strain of Staphylococcus.
To add to the craziness, Nortel has filed for Bankruptcy, which now leaves my Dad and so many employees in limbo, not knowing what the heck is going on, and now with not a whole lot of job security, mind you Nortel as been was huge stress-ball for the past few years, and it's been a long time's to keeping our fingers crossed...
On a more positive note...
Tuesday January 20th 2009 marked the inaugeration of a new President of the USA and with it comes hope of a new way of thinking and governing. Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as the 44th American President and with millions watching history being made we can see a much needed change on the horizon and feel refreshed and confident.
The house is nearly finished!! YAY! this week kept me busy painting both ceilings and walls. With paint on the brain, one has to wonder what person is in charge of giving paint colours their names?! for example, or living room is now "Spiced Vinegar" and the bedroom has acquired "Quiver Tan" both of them look great, but their names don't exactly describe the colours all that's easier to say "well the living room is a golden sand toned colour while the bedroom is a warm chocolatey brownish" (makes more sense to me! LOL)

This weekend the floor is going down in the living room which is super exciting, it will be a mix of black granite and bamboo hard wood. All we need now is the furniture and we'll be all set. After two and half months of house renovations we're finally starting to see the light at the end of the construction zone tunnel :)

A Brand New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone! May 2009 bring good health and happiness to us all :)
On Dec 29th Dan and I went to see a World Juniors hockey game at Scotiabank Place. Canada vs Germany and what a game it was! I must say it's the best hockey I've ever seen and it actually kept my attention for all 3 my husband knows, me watching hockey at home on the TV is always short attention span very rarely lasts an entire game! The atmosphere was fantastic as practically everyone in the arena was wearing a Canada jersey or at least red and white clothing (myself and Dan included). With the current OC Transpo bus strike still on, it took FOREVER to get into the parking lot, we were parked in the farthest lot in the last row so had to run from our car into the stadium to get to our seats just as the puck was being dropped at Centre ice.

The game was awesome and we had such a fabulous time cheering! Canada won 5-2 which was also super exciting :)
New Year's Eve Dan and I joined our friends, Jenna, Steve, Raeanne, Terrance, Josee, Mark and Joshua for dinner at Meule et Coquelons where we enjoyed a Raclette dinner! Delicious! I love cooking on the raclette and then broiling the food covered in beschemel sauce and cheese...lovely :) Raclette-ing also gives everyone a chance to take their time with the meal and enjoy chatting and visitng. It was also Josee's Birthday so to celebrate a few of the waiters in leiderhosen came out with a piece of cake and sang Happy Birthday.

After dinner Jenna, Steve, Dan and I decided to try our luck at the Casino Lac Leamy. It was packed to the rafters with people! But it was so much fun being there and seeing everyone dressed to the nines. I'll always remember the "pimp" looking guy with his oversized black suit with bright red pinstripes and his jacket down past his knees! hahaha...and I must say he had the girlfriend to match in her hardly there slinky black dress!! LOL Jen and I played the slots while Dan and Steve went off to catch the end of the Canada vs USA game (YAY Canada won 7-4!) Around 11:00 it was getting way too crowded and way too noisy so we all headed back to Jenkins' house to ring in the New Year watching Time's Square in New York with Dick Clark (yes, to our surprise too, he's still kicking!)
Dan and I are still plodding on with the house. This past week we've had a couple of guys over working on the drywall. With that all finished the living room and bedroom are actually starting to look like rooms now. We've knocked down the bathroom wall downstairs and connected it to the extention making it a bit bigger. We've also knocked the wall down in the living room where French doors will go to connect the old living room with the new. Upstairs the bathroom now has plumbing and a shower base and the bedroom, now drywalled, is ready to be plastered/mudded. Soon we'll be painting which is awesome :)

I keep meaning to post pictures with all my blogs, but because I usually write them at work, I'm unable to add them right away. I promise at some point I'll get them up too :)
